When i was driving through the city of Altensteig it seems like a normal German village.
But when i looked better i saw something like a big house on a hill. Afterwards i found out that it was a castle. So i parked my car and start walking towards it.
When i left the town sqaure behind me and the first couple of houses the scenery changed and i stepped into a different kind of time.
It looks that you're guided by stone sculptures towards the old City of Altensteig and the Castle.
Jomar found the first sculpture. So here he is together with my wife Mary.
The sculpture was at the beginning of a bridge that was laying over the Nagold river. So here started our tour to the top of the hill and to the Castle of Altensteig.
After this sculpture there where more so here are the ones we passed. I know there are more but these sculptures we found during the climbing to the top.
The little sign above the stairs says to the higher city.
"Zur Oberen Stadt"
So at last after a lot of sculptures and stairs we were in the higher city. And i have to say i didn't regret it so far. We stil had a couple of stairs to go but with al the nice craftsman houses and the nice scenery that you get by the viewing holes you didn't noticed that. So lets go higher to the Castle of Altensteig.
"The Old City Hall"
The old city hall is laying across the upper town square with a nice fountain and if you walk further you see this beautiful waterpomp.
At this point you have a good view on Altensteig beneath you.
Also at this point you're at the stairs towards the Castle of Altensteig.
So lets see how the Castle of Altensteig looks from the inside.
The main entrance of the castle
The photos above shows the inside of the tower were the guard was living with his family. It was not very big (about 3 by 4 meters) so if he had a couple of kids there wasn't a lot of space. From this tower he could walk over a kind of bridge to the other tower what was the jail. Now, if you want, you can be married in the tower of the guardian.
The bridge where the guardian was walking towards the prison and also could look around if everything was ok at the castle.
The photo below shows the prison with Jomar in chains.
In earlier days i don't think he would look so happy
In several show-cases they show you the history of the castle and the village
And there were craftsman working in the castle and they are still working in the castle.
On some sundays there are special events around the castle. They do swordfighting and show you things from centuries ago. People walk in clothes from those days and there is a lot to see and to do.
